Italian Grand Prix: Bezzecchi Delivers Dream Mugello Victory

The 2026 MotoGP World Championship arrived at the iconic Mugello Circuit for Round 7, and the passionate Italian crowd witnessed a memorable weekend as home hero Marco Bezzecchi secured an emotional victory for Aprilia on home soil.

Saturday's qualifying session belonged to Aprilia. Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi produced a stunning lap of 1:43.921, becoming the first rider to break into the 1:43s around Mugello and securing pole position. Aprilia locked out the entire front row with Raul Fernandez second and Jorge Martin third.

The Sprint race produced a surprise winner as Raul Fernandez controlled proceedings to claim his maiden MotoGP Sprint victory. Jorge Martin finished second, while Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the podium. Pole-sitter Bezzecchi recovered to fourth after a difficult start, while Marc Marquez finished fifth.

The result trimmed Bezzecchi's championship advantage and set up an intriguing Sunday showdown.

Sunday's main event delivered one of the stories of the season. After an intense battle with Francesco Bagnaia in the opening stages, Bezzecchi gradually took control of the race and pulled clear to secure a famous victory in front of the Italian fans. It was a landmark result for Aprilia, marking a dominant one-two finish at Ducati's home race.

Jorge Martin completed the Aprilia one-two in second place, while Bagnaia fought hard to secure third and return to the podium at his favourite circuit. Ai Ogura impressed with a charge to fourth, narrowly missing out on a podium finish after a late-race duel with Bagnaia.

Bezzecchi's victory strengthened his position at the top of the championship standings, while Martin's second-place finish ensured Aprilia enjoyed a near-perfect weekend. Bagnaia showed encouraging pace, but Ducati were ultimately unable to stop Aprilia's historic success at Mugello.

Pole position, a lap record, and victory in front of his home crowd—Marco Bezzecchi could hardly have scripted a better Mugello weekend. The Italian delivered under immense pressure and left Tuscany with an increased championship lead and one of the most significant wins of his MotoGP career.
