Whenever Formula 1 introduces a major regulation overhaul, the expectations are enormous. The new 2026 regulations represented one of the most ambitious technical resets in the sport’s history, aiming to reshape almost every aspect of the championship. From all new power units and active aerodynamics to lighter cars and fully sustainable fuels, the FIA promised a future that would be faster to innovate, easier to race, and more relevant to the automotive industry.
Now with 11 races and half of the season complete, there is finally enough evidence to judge whether those promises have translated into reality. While some changes have been clear successes, others have revealed unintended consequences that have already forced Formula 1 and the FIA into refining the regulations. What Were the Regulations Trying to Achieve?

The FIA’s vision wasn’t simply to make the cars different – it was to future-proof Formula 1. The governing body wanted a championship that remained the pinnacle of motorsport while becoming more sustainable, attracting new manufacturers, and improving the quality of racing.

Instead of simply driving flat-out to the finish, Antonelli had to strategically manage battery deployment to ensure he had enough electrical power to fend off repeated attacks, highlighting just how central energy management has become under the 2026 regulations.
Another notable trend has been Mercedes’ strong adaptation to the new rules. While the works Mercedes team has quickly established itself as one of the benchmark outfits, its customer teams have generally struggled to extract comparable performance from the same power unit package. This has prompted questions over whether Mercedes has found an advantage through chassis integration, energy deployment strategies, or a combination of both, illustrating that success under the new regulations extends far beyond simply having the strongest engine.
Perhaps the most eye-catching statistic has surrounded overtaking. Formula 1 has pointed to a dramatic increase in passing opportunities, with the 2026 Australian Grand Prix producing 120 overtakes compared with just 45 during the equivalent race in 2025. While the figure has generated debate – critics argue that raw overtake numbers don’t necessarily reflect the quality of racing – it nevertheless suggests that the revised aerodynamic package is achieving one of its primary objectives: creating more opportunities for drivers to race on another on track.

Development throughout the remainder of the year will be crucial, as McLaren’s ability to understand and optimise the regulations may ultimately determine whether they can return to fighting regularly at the front before the season concludes.
Drivers
The increased emphasis on energy management has arguably rewarded drivers capable of balancing outright pace with strategic thinking.
Meanwhile, others have criticised the amount of management now required compared to simply racing flat-out.
Max Verstappen has criticised the new power unit framework, stating plainly “As a pure driver, I enjoy driving flat out, and at the moment, you cannot drive like that.”
Furthermore, Lewis Hamilton has called the regulations “ridiculously complex” and remarked that “none of the fans are going to understand it.”
Have the New Regulations Delivered?
This ultimately depends on which promise you focus on.
If the goal was sustainability and manufacturer relevance, the regulations have largely achieved what they set out to do.
If the goal was creating a fresh technical challenge, they have unquestionably succeeded.
However, if the promise was producing more exciting racing immediately, the verdict is much more complicated.
The need for mid-season refinements suggests that Formula 1 is still searching for the right balance between innovation and entertainment.
Much like previous regulation resets in 2009 and 2014, it may take multiple seasons before the concept reaches its full potential.

Halfway through the 2026 season, the answer is much more complicated than a simple yes or no.
