Hungarian Grand Prix: Márquez Reaches 100 Wins in Balaton Park Masterclass

The 2026 MotoGP World Championship arrived at Hungary's Balaton Park Circuit for Round 8 of the season, delivering drama, controversy, and a historic milestone as Marc Márquez claimed the 100th Grand Prix victory of his career.

After a weekend in which he topped practice, secured pole position, won the Sprint race, and dominated Sunday's Grand Prix, the Ducati star reminded the paddock that he remains one of the sport's greatest competitors.

Saturday qualifying belonged to Marc Márquez. The Spaniard suffered a crash during Q2 but bounced back immediately to set a stunning lap of 1:36.785 and secure pole position.

Jorge Martín could only manage eighth on the grid, while championship leader Marco Bezzecchi started from the second row. The front row was an all-Spanish affair, underlining the strength of Spain's current generation of riders.

The Sprint race saw Márquez convert pole into victory with a dominant flag-to-flag performance.

Acosta initially attempted to challenge the Ducati rider, but Márquez controlled the race from the front and steadily increased his advantage. The result provided the perfect preparation for Sunday's main event.

The main race exploded into life immediately.

At Turn One, Jorge Martín collided with fellow Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi, triggering a multi-rider accident that also eliminated several contenders. Both Martín and Bezzecchi were taken for medical checks but fortunately escaped serious fractures. The incident dramatically altered the championship battle and opened the door for others to score heavily.

With several championship rivals out of contention, the race became a fascinating duel between Marc Márquez and Pedro Acosta.

Acosta led early and looked capable of securing a breakthrough victory, but Márquez gradually reeled him in. On lap 14, the Ducati rider launched his decisive attack and began pulling away as Acosta struggled with tyre wear in the closing stages.

Francesco Bagnaia maintained a lonely third position behind the leading pair, while Ai Ogura and Luca Marini completed the top five.

The victory was Márquez's 100th Grand Prix win across all classes, placing him alongside legends Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi as the only riders to reach the century mark.

Even more impressively, the achievement came less than a month after shoulder and foot surgery, making his comeback one of the most remarkable stories of the 2026 season. The win was also Ducati's 100th MotoGP victory.

The Hungarian Grand Prix could prove to be a turning point in the title fight. With Bezzecchi failing to score after the opening-lap crash, Márquez significantly reduced the gap in the standings and re-established himself as a genuine championship contender.

After a perfect weekend featuring pole position, Sprint victory, fastest pace, and Grand Prix success, Márquez leaves Hungary with momentum firmly on his side as MotoGP heads to the next round.
