Indy car rookie Mick Schumacher recently revealed he has been suffering from a wrist injury since his debut in March.

The German driver injured his left arm after a crash in the opening lap of the St Petersburg race, when he was caught in a collission that was caused by Sting Ray Robb.

He explained to Sky Germany that a piece of his left wrist

Due to the packed Indycar schedule this year Schumacher will be unable to undergo the necessary surgery until the season concludes in September.

This revelation comes after the rookie's string of poor results in the first five races, likely explaining his DNF, 18th, 22nd, 24th and 17th place finishes. However, Schumacher revealed to Sky Germany he is optimistic: "To be honest, I haven’t been looking at the news at all,” he added. “I think that’s actually helpful; being so far away from everything over here means I don’t really have to listen to it.

“In the paddock, the reaction to what we’ve done so far has been quite positive, which actually surprised me a bit at first. I expected I’d have to shield myself from a bit of a shitstorm, but that wasn't the case.

Despite the injury and being early into the season the German did manage to qualify 4th in Phoenix, indicating performance and pace is there and in time Schumacher may grow comfortable in Indycar.

Wrist injuries are common within the sport, many Indycar drivers have suffered similarly to Schumacher, with his current coach Ryan Briscoe even breaking his own wrist in an incident in 2013.

Open test sessions for the upcoming Indy500 happened over the weekend and Schumacher finished 25th on day one and 17th on the second day. Which appears to be a solid midfield result for a rookie on the Brickyard, however fellow rookie Caio Collet set the fastest time of the weekend highlighting the German's poor performance.

It's early days into Schumacher's Indycar career, but he seems a promising midfield driver, and if all goes well with his surgery, next season could see a return to the Schumacher name fighting for points, and potential podiums and wins.
