It has been announced in the past week that Mick Schumacher, son of the legendary F1 champion Michael Schumacher, will be racing in IndyCar for RLL’s number 47 in the 2026 season. This marks the German’s return to single seaters, in which he made a last appearance in Formula 1’s 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.
The German has an extensive and successful career in motorsports. He joined the sport in 2008, in karting, moving up to German Formula 4 in 2015, where he was the vice-champion. In the Italian Formula 4, he raced for Prema, also conquering the vice-championship. He won his first championship in Formula 3, in the 2018 season, where he took the leadership after an astounding win in the Red Bull Ring. After two seasons in Formula 2, he won the championship in 2020, also racing with Prema. He joined Formula 1 as a Haas driver, where he didn’t have delightful results and, therefore, moved to Mercedes to be a test and reserve driver between 2023 and 2024. In this year of 2025, he raced in the World Endurance Championship, better known as WEC, for the Alpine Endurance Team. He and his teammates have conquered podiums in Imola, Spa-Francorchamps and Fuji.
Schumacher feverously wanted to come back racing in single seaters, and his official return was when he tested one of RLL’s cars in Indianapolis, surprising with the second-best time. With that result, many rumors of him moving to IndyCar have started, even when his uncle, Ralf Schumacher, expressed disapproval of that decision. On November 24, 2025, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has confirmed that Mick would be joining them for the 2026 season, driving the car that once belonged to Devlin DeFrancesco and having Graham Rahal and Louis Foster as his teammates.
The 26-year-old driver has expressed enthusiasm for the change, highlighting the “pure and direct racing” that the American category offers. He also states that, with experiences in both Formula 1 and Endurance, he has knowledge and visions that will collaborate in his partnership with the team. He is also curious about the new experiences and is always interested in broadening his horizons with this new and exiting journey that begins for the driver in IndyCar.
The team principal in RLL Racing, Bobby Rahal, states that he is also excited for Mick’s arrival on the team and in IndyCar, highlighting his exceptional test in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. According to Bobby, Mick has impressed everyone on the team and motivated everyone to bring him to their program, also saying that everyone is happy and can’t wait for the work to start in the next season.
With this transition, Mick Schumacher joins an uprising group of talents that seek new opportunities outside of Formula 1. IndyCar has proven itself as a fertile field for drivers who are looking to highlight themselves in a different and competitive environment. The expectations are high for Mick’s debut, which will take place in St. Petersburg, Florida, in March 2026.
