As Mercedes takes its time finalizing a contract for George Russell beyond 2025, fans are left wondering: who will the British driver be racing for next year? To understand the stakes, let’s look back at his journey so far.
Russell joined the Mercedes Junior Team in 2017, serving as a test driver while racing for Force India. In 2019, he made his Formula 1 debut with Williams (a Mercedes engine customer) signing a multi-year deal.
Williams wasn’t competitive at the time, leaving Russell fighting at the back of the grid. Still, his talent was clear: Team Principals ranked him among the top drivers on the grid, and he even led Williams to a podium finish — a rare feat for the British team.
Russell’s big break came in 2020, when Lewis Hamilton tested positive for COVID-19. Stepping in at the Sakhir Grand Prix, Russell impressive performance, showcased the speed and composure that would mark his future.
After Williams refused to release him early, Russell joined Mercedes full-time in 2022. His timing was challenging: new regulations had ended the team’s dominance. Even so, Russell held his own, matching Hamilton on track and proving he belonged at a top team.
The 2023 season was tougher. Mercedes struggled with an inconsistent car, and Russell’s performance dipped in the second half of the year. Still, the team extended his contract through 2025, showing faith in his talent.
In 2024, Russell secured wins at the Austrian and Las Vegas Grands Prix, though some of his results were affected by penalties. He started 2025 strongly, taking podiums at Albert Park, Shanghai, Sakhir, and Miami, then adding Canada, Baku and Singapore to his winning tally.
Looking ahead, Russell’s seat at Mercedes isn’t guaranteed. Rumors suggest Toto Wolff may be exploring the possibility of signing reigning champion Max Verstappen, which has slowed the process of extending Russell’s contract.
With rookie Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes sitting second in the Constructors’ standings, the team faces a tough decision. Neither Antonelli nor Russell has a confirmed deal beyond 2025, leaving the paddock buzzing with speculation about the future of Mercedes’ driver lineup.
Will Mercedes stick with the driver pairing, or gamble on a reshuffle that could reshape the grid?
